Where else but at the San Diego Fair can you spend the day, see exhibits and fine art, hear great bands, and eat to your heart's content for pennies on the dollar, or more specifically $2 on Tuesdays during the summer, but not every $2 offering is a good deal and with the $2 Tasters portions getting smaller and smaller each year, here's what to avoid on $2 Tuesday Taste of the Fair.
The San Diego Fair ends on Wednesday July 4th, but there's one last Tuesday Taste of the Fair, check out our Top 5 $2 tasters not to waste your money on.
5. 1/2 mile long hot dog from Icee in the Avenue/Skyway.
Last time I checked a mile was 5280 feet, as you can tell, this hotdog is about 5279 feet short. Basically you get a 6 inch hot dog for $2. And while this picture makes them look appetizing, they are dry and taste like leather.
4. Sample of pretzel bites from PHD & me in the Concourse.
How unappetizing is this? These samples of pretzel bites look like two soft dough turds. This is their example of their $2 offering, and not me putting my cup on a stainless steel counter. Kinda makes you want to get a tetanus shot. The full soft pretzels are, however, huge and look tantalizingly tasty: if only they would have offered half a soft pretzel or even 1/4 of a soft pretzel.
3. Small sized cone from Crutchees in the Concourse.
So basically you get a skinny small cone with a dollop of ice cream. You get more ice cream from the tiny cones at Soup Plantation. If your craving a cone, and I mean that literally as that's about all you get, then spend your $2 on this cone with a little dab of ice cream. If you really want an ice cream cone, go whole hog and buy a full size cone.
2. Taste of Ceviche from MTM – Monterey Bay Calamari in the Clocktower.
Ok, there are supposed to be two small round chips here with ceviche but the first one got eaten before I could take a photo. While the portions are small, at least they tell you that's its a taste so you aren't expecting much. The other nice thing is that it's not bad. But when you can get so many others things in a much larger quantity, you can do better.
And the number 1 What not to eat on $2 Tuesday Taste of the Fair is…
1. Beach taco from Reno's Fish n Chips in the Skyway.
Donde esta la playa de tacos? Translation: Where is the beach taco?
Do you see a beach taco? I see a big mound of cabbage, some salsa, and a little hint of something in the right corner of the photo. There's so much cabbage you can't even see the tiny corn tortilla that is holding the “beach taco.” This should be called Got Cabbage? The beach taco itself (and I know I should have moved all the cabbage and taken a photo but I didn't) was mostly batter. The $2 taster beach taco was about smaller than one of the pretzel samples (Number 4 What not to eat). Think 1 inch fried fish n chip batter and a hint of some type of fish, may even have been the same fish from the fish n chips. These $2 beach tacos must be the droppings…
